It’s cold outside! Nothing feels better than having some warm winter comfort food after a long day in this frigid weather.
We are back with our latest Global Business Journalism food recommendations! Come check out these soothing delicacies that you can enjoy at Tsinghua campus canteens during this winter season (or any time of the year).
Slizzing Plate Sole Fish(铁板龙利鱼)@ Lanyuan, 3rd floor
Listen to the sizzle of the iron plate! At the Lanyuan canteen, there's more than just their famous lamb stew hot pot—this dish is a must-try, too! Think of it as your very own personal teppanyaki experience. It's perfect for craving something warm but wanting a break from soup and hot pot. It even comes with rice and fries. And don't worry about going hungry — the portions are generous!
Note: Lanyuan is situated in Zhao-Lan-Yuan, just south of the old school gate, right across from McDonald's.
Clay Pot Ribs Rice Noodles(砂锅排骨米线)@ Lanyuan, 3rd floor
In Lanyuan (a true foodie heaven, I must say), you can find these mouthwatering Clay Pot Ribs and Rice Noodles! But watch out — the clay pot is scorching hot! The broth is packed with rich flavors, making it the perfect dish to warm your day.
Tanghulu(冰糖葫芦), @ Lanyuan 3rd floor
A classic Chinese winter delicacy, Tanghulu is a true treat! Fresh fruits are dipped in melted sugar, creating a glossy coating that adds a hint of sweetness while enhancing the refreshing taste of the fruit. These skewers come in various styles — stick to tradition with hawthorn fruit or try modern twists featuring blueberries and strawberries. Pick your favorite and savor the unique crunch and flavor! You can also find them at Taoliyuan and Guanchouyuan, so don’t miss out on this delightful winter snack.
Malatang (麻辣烫)@ Zijing Yuan, 4th floor
The Malatang (hot and numbing Sichuan-style soup) at Zijing, 4th Floor, is hands down one of my favorite spots for Malatang in town! What sets it apart is its special ingredient — xiaosurou, or fried crispy pork tender. This unique addition is something you won't find at most other Malatang stalls. The trick is to combine the crispy meat into the rich, flavorful soup right before digging in. The crispy layer soaks up the sauce while retaining a hint of crunch, creating an incredible texture and taste that’s hard to beat. And don’t worry if you're not a fan of spice — they’re happy to prepare a milder version just for you!
Lamb Stew Hot Pot (羊肉锅仔) @ Lanyuan, 2nd floor
No words can truly describe the comfort of having a Hot Pot on a chilly day after a hectic schedule. This Lamb Stew Hot Pot is the perfect remedy. They serve a generous portion of lamb at an extremely reasonable price. Beware! The Hot Pot experience is serious business here — it arrives on a candle-lit stove, keeping it piping hot. To top it off, it includes complimentary soup and rice.
Mashed Potatoes with Noodles (土豆泥拌粉) @ Zijing Yuan, 4th floor
The ultimate combination of carbohydrates and happiness — Mashed Potatoes with Noodles. It's perfectly fine to indulge yourself on a cheat day (or every day!), rewarding yourself with the pure joy that only carbs can bring. This popular dish from the fourth floor of Zijing Canteen is a fan favorite. The hint of spiciness elevates the flavor, making it the ideal comfort food for sweater weather.
Tomato Beef Brisket Noodles (番茄牛腩粉) @ Dingxiang Yuan
Say no more. This is hands down one of the best beef brisket noodles you'll find in town. The broth is packed with rich tomato flavor and comes with a generous serving of tender beef brisket. For those who crave an extra kick, you can enhance the experience by adding their signature Hunan Chili, which takes this food symphony to a whole new level. You can find this delight at the Hunanese Noodle stall in Dingxiang — the one-story canteen at the corner of the C Building and Xuetang Road.
