Students from about 70 nations and every province in China have enrolled in the Global Business Journalism program since its creation in 2007. But Emma Ma is the first to grow up in the middle of the Gobi Desert. Her hometown, Karamay, is an oil industry outpost in a remote part of Xinjiang in China's far west. In this video, Emma, who is the teaching assistant in Professor Rick Dunham's Hot Topics in the Global Economy course, takes us to Karamay and introduces us both to the rugged topography and some of its rugged inhabitants.
